Regina is breaking records when it comes home sales, even with a recession elsewhere in the country.

It is not often that a city in the Atlantic provinces can lay claim to the title of hottest job market in the country. However, St. John’s, Newfoundland, at 6.7% employment growth in January, was faster than all the other CMAs in Canada. The only exception was Regina, Saskatchewan, where the rate of employment growth was also 6.7%.

It could mean big things for the environment while also serving to help increase private oil production in Saskatchewan.
Crown Investment Corporation officials say it could be just a matter of months until the government of Montana and the province reach an initial agreement on North America’s first major carbon-capture project. Utilizing carbon sequestration technology pioneered at the University of Regina, it would see greenhouse gases produced by both region’s coal-burning power plants sunk into oil fields. Not only does that prevent them from damaging the atmosphere, it can also help private oil producers extract hard-to-reach oil deposits.

SASKATCHEWAN JOB NUMBERS CONTINUE TO SHINE AMIDST ECONOMIC GLOOM
There were 16,600 more people working in Saskatchewan in January compared to the same month a year ago - an increase of 3.3 per cent. That’s by far the strongest rate of employment growth in the country and a sharp contrast to the rest of Canada, which lost more than 126,000 jobs during that same period.
Saskatchewan still has the lowest unemployment rate in the country.

So exactly how long can Saskatchewan remain an island? In the United States, a mind-boggling 598,000 jobs were lost in January — the most in any single month in 35 years. With icons of American business like Microsoft, General Motors, Ford, Home Depot, Caterpillar, Pfizer, Macy’s, Estee Lauder and Liz Claiborne all announcing layoffs last month, America’s unemployment rate vaulted nearly a percentage point to 7.6 per cent.
